A DRIVEN, knowledgeable and enthusiastic all-rounder with extensive experience in a variety of freelance and staff editorial and production roles for a wide range of arts, entertainment, news and current affairs print, online and broadcast platforms. Creative and well organised, with outstanding writing skills and the ability to work to tight deadlines.
As big a fan of George Orwell’s precise social commentary as Hunter S Thompson’s brand of freewheeling Gonzo journalism, I originally got the media bug editing my own photocopied punk rock fanzine in the early Eighties before formal NCTJ journalistic training led me to local newspapers and the NME.
After freelancing and staffing for the Leeds Other Paper / Northern Star, Brag magazine, iD and MixMag in West Yorkshire, plus a five-year stint as a presenter on ‘community radio station’ Dream FM, I moved to Manchester to work at the Big Issue in the North, as arts, features and finally deputy editor.
Since then, I have freelanced for the Guardian, BBC Television, Sony PlayStation, Flux Magazine, Creative Times and Planet Confidential, as well as subbing news at Associated Metro and Sport Newspapers. I also launched Dxn magazine for Community Arts Northwest and Manchester City Council’s Cultural Diversity Advisory Group, and the Bespoke project for the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council, Nokia, the Lancashire Evening Post and five UK universities.
I drew on this experience as Marketing & PR Manager for Persian Cat Press, a digital publishing start-up based in Bolton. This varied and wide-ranging role required me to create and implement a marketing strategy for a series of original interactive narrative apps for iPad, iPhone and other touchscreen devices, aimed at younger children, teens and young adults, and adults.
Most recently I’ve been working as the lead writer for Shine Bid Services, a professional services company supporting tender responses for major construction and infrastructure businesses.
My responsibilities include commissioning, researching, writing and presenting intel reports, leading client kick-off meetings, writing, sub-editing and proof-reading bid documents, copywriting web, newsletter and promo material, copywriting, updating and managing app (iOS and Android) CMS and a wide-ranging social media remit, including research, engagement and business development.
I combine strong project management skills and the ability to effectively engage diverse groups of stakeholders with rigorous editorial judgement and an engaging, versatile writing style.
I have good ideas and I know how to put them into practise.
